Kehta Hai Dil... Jee Le Zara
Sony,  Monday - Thursday, 9.30 pm

What is it about: Saanchi, aged 34, is a successful business woman taking care of  her younger brother and sister, an ajji and a naani.  The three siblings were orphaned when Saanchi was young and since then her grandmothers have stayed with her. However, between her work and family responsibilities, Saanchi has missed the marriage bus, a huge cause of worry for her grandmoms, who are desperately searching a groom for her.  Enter Dhruv, a 27-year old lawyer and sparks fly between the two. The stage is set for a older woman-younger man love story.

What’s good about it:
While a girl past her marriageable age is still considered a grave issue in India,  the serial thankfully doesn’t take it so seriously. There is a freshness to it in terms of settings, scenes and the cast.
Even the colours used are bright and lively.  The sets — be it the bungalow where Saanchi’s family resides, her office and the factory — all supposed to be in Panchgani, look authentic.

The attractive Sangeeta Ghosh who makes a comeback to TV after six years and the good-looking Ruslaan Mumtaz, who makes his TV debut, are eye-candy.  Veteran actress Sulabha Deshpande as ajji is a natural and makes her character very homely. She is complemented well by Meenakshi Sethi who plays naani. In fact, there’s a good chemistry between the two!  The story moves at a brisk pace keeping you engaged.

What’s not:
Saanchi, who is shown to be sensible and independent goes overboard in catering to her family’s — especially her younger college-going sister’s whims and fancies. Instead, shouldn’t she be making her sister independent and teach her to share responsibility?  Delnaaz’s character Dilshad, also a 30 plus unmarried woman desperately trying to get hooked especially to a younger guy jars in the realistic soap. It’s completely OTT.  Also, the serial has a Bade Acche Laggte Hai hangover where Priya (Sakshi Tanwar) was a mature, independent woman who did not consider marriage to be the be-all and end-all of life, at least when the serial started!

Performances:
Sangeeta is overall good but at times look like she’s trying too hard to be real. Ruslaan as the mischievous Dhruv is a delight to watch.

Way ahead:  The serial is refreshing but it remains to be seen how it unfolds – if  Saanchi will continue to be a no-nonsense woman or get into the saas-bahu mode like her predecessors.

Kehta Hai Dil Jee Le Zara

Time:  Monday to Thursday at 9:30 on Sony TV

Producer: Shristi Arya, Goldie Behl

Director: Siddharth Sen Gupta

Story: Niranjan Iyer

The story so far - Set in Panchgani, Kehta Hai Dil Jee Le Zara is the story of Saanchi (Sangeeta Ghosh) who is an unmarried girl at the age of 34. Having lost her parents at an early age she is a mature young lady who has taken over the responsibility of her fathers Jam and Jelly business while also taking care of her siblings - her younger brother and sister. She also has to look after her grandmas; her aaji (Sulbha Despande) and nani (Meenakshi Sethi). Both the grandmothers are worried about Saanchi's marriage and are eager to see her married and settled in life. However, Saanchi is keen on completing her duties towards her business and family.

Enters Dhruv, a young lawyer full of passion for life. A fun-loving young man he has many small naughty encounters with Saanchi and is staying as a paying guest at her friend Dilshad's (Delnaaz Irani) house. Dilshad too is unmarried but unlike Saanchi is eager to find a young, handsome man for herself.

Saanchi is having problems at her factory as she has plans for expansion but loses on a big order as her cousin brother who owns the land that Saanchi has taken on lease to grow strawberries comes and creates trouble. While Saanchi is riddled with her problems on the personal as well as professional front, Dhruv comes as a breath of fresh air, however Saanchi is completely upset with his in-your face behavior.

What works -

Casting - Obviously the casting works! Casting Director Vishal Sharma has done a good job and has chosen the perfect actors for the show. While this was obviously the best choice for Sangeeta Ghosh to make her comeback, even for Ruslaan it was the best choice to make his Television debut. Sulbha Deshpande as the Marathi aaji andMeenakshi Sethi as the Punjabi nani, both are fit for the roles. Even the rest of the cast including Saanchi's brother and sister, her friend played by Delnaaz and the office staff all add enough support. Even a one episode wonder, the character who comes in as Shivam, Saanchi's marriage proposal was a good looking guy and decent actor.

Acting - When it comes to acting, Sangeeta is an ace as usual. Her effortless transformation from being the most responsible in the family to a vulnerable woman who has tears choked in her heart is something to watch out for. Showing no emotions on her face yet rejoicing on bagging a big order or crying her heart out when alone or showing a composed nature in front of her family, or giving a mindful to Dhruv when he lies to her, she is a natural actor in a wide range. You almost feel her pain as she talks about her responsibilities to Shivam when just a minute back she looks as if she likes him.

However, it is Ruslaan who is exceptional. Coming from films this guy has no hangovers and is too good at his job. The ever-smiling face, eager to please looks with the naughty tint in his eyes and saying his tongue-in-cheek dialogues, Ruslaan is a natural! Though his character is supposed to be fun loving and loud, he never comes across as irritating. His over-acting in some scenes is actually entertaining. It won't be long before Ruslaan has a huge fan following for being cute, adorable and very, very likeable.

Sulbha Deshpande should be a case study in natural acting and her mannerisms and dialogue delivery look as if she was always the character that she portrays! Even the actors who play Saanchi's siblings are well rehearsed when it comes to their scenes. Delnaaz who is once again cast as a lovable friend does complete justice to her role!

Story - Even though it is the cliched young boy meets a mature, unmarried girl which has earlier been tried and become successful in Astitva - Ek Prem Kahani, this time round it manages to look fresh! The treatment given to the story and the setting is what makes the difference. Niranjan Iyer who has just been applauded for his story for the film D-day, comes up with this gem for Television.

Along with the regular track of an unmarried girl, the story also has the business angle and soon the story should explore the reasons behind the rivalry between the cousins. If we are not mistaken then there should also be a back-story about Saanchi and she may even have a past love interest.

The dialogues by Purva Naresh look effortless when the characters speak them. They are just like what a family banter would sound like in any other household. The words make you break into smiles and laughter at appropriate places.

Sets -The location for the shoot itself is lovely. While a lovely corner of Mumbai's Film City has been replicated as Panchgani it definitely looks like as if it is the beautiful hill station. After watching those big, haveli type sets in every other show the cute brightly painted little cottages surrounded by natural greenery is more than welcome for the eager urban eyes. Since the shoot happened in the monsoons, the rains have been deftly blended into the storyline making the story as well as the look of the show beautiful.

Costumes - Saanchi wearing those lovely cotton kurtas or loose comfy pyjamas at night, Dhruv's red sweater, aaji's crisp cotton sarees and nani's Punjabi suits they are so much in sync with the story line. Ekta Gupta has done a wonderful job with the costumes!

All in all Kehta Hai Dil... Jee Le Zara definitely has the Shristi Arya touch to it. Shrishti, who gave us not at all typical shows earlier too with unique sounding Lipstick and Twinkle Beauty Parlor manages to touch a chord with this show too.

Moments we like - Right from the first episode there are touching moments like the one when both the grandmas want to show Saanchi the wedding invitation card, when aaji puts oil in her hair and tries to tell her the difference between being ok and being happy, when they all try to emotionally blackmail each other, when Saanchi remembers her parents in times of needs and recollects how she would run to them with her report card when she was in school, like the grandmas lovely nok-jhonk between themselves and later how they both in unison like Dhruv during the mis-understanding and are happy when he says he can stay with them forever thinking that he can be a ghar-jamai which will put an end to all of their and Saanchi's troubles. Funny or emotional the moments are sure to stay with you and we can't wait for the romantic ones to begin!

What doesn't work -

There is hardly anything to not like in the show. Sangeeta Ghosh does look nice in her Fab-Indiaish costumes but her hair always let loose on one side is a bit irritating. She is a busy lady whether at office or home so one cannot digest the fact that she is comfortable easily managing her long hair while doing all the chores all the time.

Also it does come as a contrast when we see Delnaaz, also shown as 30 plus and as yet unmarried being more than eager to find a groom for herself. Nothing wrong with that but when her eagerness gets transformed into an appetite for a young, handsome boy whom she is planning to get by keeping a young paying guest at home, it doesn't look hilarious. When you are trying to show the serious side of the story of an unmarried young girl it does look a bit odd. Humor and laughter is needed in shows but it could have been generated from other sources. As it is, the grandmas and others in the family do have a subtle humor base and so does Ruslaan's character who goes over the top but thankfully does not irritate.

Our take -

Kehta Hai Dil... Jee Le Zara is a fresh take on a love story between a young boy and a serious mature girl. If treated with care as it has been done so far, the show will do exceptionally well over the coming weeks. The fresh outdoor touch should stay and should be balanced with the indoor shoot. While we all know that the story may soon see a twist with all the problems that Saanchi is facing at the factory and with Dhruv being a lawyer it would be interesting to see what happens next?

I won't mind kissing Sangeeta Ghosh: Ruslaan Mumtaz

Actor Ruslaan Mumtaz, who essays an younger man in love with an older woman in his debut TV show 'Kehta Hai Dil...Jee Le Zara', speaks to TOI about his fascination for older women, chemistry with co-actor Sangeeta Ghosh and the problems caused by his good looks. Excerpts:

Have you ever fallen in love with an older woman?
Not really! Only once when I was in Class X, at a boarding school in Panchgani, I was intrigued by this chemistry teacher called Miss Blossom. She was the only older woman who I found attractive and interesting. However, now when I think of it I feel it was her name which did the trick. However, the good part was that she was also fond of me as I was good in studies.

Are you open to the idea of dating an older woman?
I don't think an older woman would be interested in dating me as I am too immature for women of even my own age . So it's going to be very tough for older women to like me.

Tell us about your chemistry with Sangeeta Ghosh.
Fantastic! She is super-talented and gorgeous. And undoubtedly, she gets my attention as well as respect.

Would you be comfortable romancing her on screen?
I am waiting to romance her as the show progresses. In fact, I have kissed all my heroines in all the movies I have acted in so far. So I wouldn't be uncomfortable doing that with her either. But I don't know how it works on TV.

Did the lack of good film offers make you take up TV?
I want to do quality work. The films that were offered to me were not as good as the TV projects. So I took it up. The team of this show has people who have worked in films too. To refuse such a good team, just because it is TV, didn't make sense. The funniest part is that in the last 20 days, I got four movie offers. When I told them, I am doing this show and would be busy for another six months, they were ready to give me the signing amount and wait for me. So, it's kind of working for me.

Was the film MP3 the best thing that has happened to you?
Obviously, since it was my debut film and it made me what I am today. Even today people talk about my role in MP3.

We don't get to see your mother, Anjana Mumtaz, on screen anymore...
She has retired and doesn't want to take up any work. Often she is offered films and TV projects, which she even agrees to, but backs off at the last moment. So I deciphered that she doesn't want to really work, but party. Earlier, when I was in college, I used to have late nights and they used to wait for me. Now, I am home early, waiting for them while they are party.

We heard you lost out on Slumdog Millionare because of your good looks...
I don't consider myself a talented actor. So whatever I am today is because of my looks. I think I just got lucky.

You also like cooking. Isn't it?
Yes, I can cook chicken and keema. This Eid, I made Sheer Korma. Before Jee Le Zara was locked, I was the official cook of the house for six months. My parents would go out parting and would call me to tell what to cook.

I won't mind kissing Sangeeta Ghosh: Ruslaan Mumtaz

Review of Kehta Hai Dil…Jee Le Zara

kehta+hai+jee+le+zaraSony TV’s new entry on the block, Kehta Hai Dil…Jee Le Zara, starring the very pretty Sangeeta Ghosh and extremely good looking Ruslaan Mumtaaz, seems to be promising, but how long will this sweet romance last?

The show has been termed a ‘Bold’ one as it is based on the older woman-younger man romance cum marriage. Another show, Astitva – Ek Prem Kahani which aired on Zee TV years ago, had already gone through with this concept of the older woman-younger man love affair, which was played by the very talented Niki Aneja and Varun Badola, whose age gap difference was definitely a decade. It was termed as one of the ‘Boldest’ shows in television history as it covered the problems faced due to the vast age gap in a relationship.

Jee Le Zara is clearly not going down that road as the age gap here isn’t too vast between the two, as a 27 year old boy and 34 year old girl getting caught in the romantic front isn’t too bad right ? A 7 year age difference definitely isn’t a decade!

The show which premiered on 15th August opened up at Panchgani, a beautiful hill station where Saanchi (Sangeeta Ghosh) lives with her 2 grandmothers, Aaji (Sulabha Deshpande) and Naani (Meenakshi Sethi), 2 younger siblings Advait and Prachi and her best friend Dilshaad (Delnaaz Irani) and has a strawberry farm of her own.  Saanchi is a beautiful, independent and hardworking women who is at all times concerned about her family and refuses marriage offers that come her way (and hence we know that Dhruv (Ruslaan Mumtaaz) would surely have some space in her life), as shown in the very 1st episode.

Sangeeta Ghosh has done justice to the character of Saanchi very well, and has definitely bounced back! Delnaaz Irani playing the sweet and bubbly character Dilshaad, Saanchi’s best friend, has done a great job on that front and ensures a fun and promising character.

Coming to Ruslaan Mumtaaz, who has bounced from Films to TV, definitely seems promising in this new avatar of his. He plays the role of Dhruv,a young, good looking, wealthy lawyer who knows how to enjoy every moment of life well. His character has already caught up with some good responses and we hope, this goes a long way.

The show is still going on to establish and settle down its characters well and hence it is a bit too early to state how they would fair in the future, but the lovely locations of the swanky houses, strawberry fields and breath taking scenery are really feel good images and definitely want to make you watch the show some more.

The concept of how they are going to take this forward is not too clear as this topic has already been covered before,  but all in all, it is a fresh story, has some good looking faces and if they decide to stick to a simple hearted story line, it can definitely work wonders for them!

Kehta Hai Dil Jee Le Zara - Sangeeta Ghosh, Ruslaan Mumtaz - Exclusive

Sangeeta Ghosh to connect with audience with Jee Le Zara

Being second to someone doesn’t matter to me: Ruslaan Mumtaz - PTI

Monday, 12 August 2013 - 08:09 PM IST
Bollywood actor Ruslaan Mumtaz is excited about his debut on television and considers the small screen as a powerful medium to reach out to people.

Ruslaan, son of actress Anjana Mumtaz, features in Kehta Hai Dil Jee Le Zara, a romantic drama which will be aired on Sony entertainment channel from August 15.

The 31-year-old, who made his Bollywood debut with Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar in 2007, is paired opposite Sangeeta Ghosh, a well-known TV actress who became a household name with her character Pammi in hugely popularly show Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand.
“The show has a fantastic team — Sangeeta Ghosh, Siddharth Sengupta, Niranjan Iyengar and others. For me, to refuse such an offer would have been stupid because if these people ever make a film, I might not feature in that film and the only way to work with them is on TV,” Ruslaan said.

He was nervous working with Sangeeta, he added. “I always worked with new actors; I never worked with established actors. I needed to be a little bit prepared while doing scenes with her,” he said.

The show chronicles the life of 34-year-old Saanchi (played by Sangeeta), a strong, selfless, free-spirited woman living on her own terms and spreading happiness in and around her dear ones. But destiny works in mysterious ways and Dhruv Goel (Ruslaan), a suave and wealthy lawyer, walks into her life. He seeks to change Saanchi’s outlook towards her own life.

Ruslaan, who has also worked in films like Dangerous Ishhq and I Don’t Luv U, is amazed with the reach of small screen.

“I have realised that TV is a powerful medium. In recent times, I have been interacting a lot with TV actors and I see their fame and success. And somewhere I felt that since I am an actor and I can be in that position, why I am holding myself back? Just because I want to do films? And I changed my mindset,” said Ruslaan.

Ruslaan is comfortable with the fact that most TV serials are woman-dominated and this will be no different. “I am just going to honestly do my work and if people connect with that, I am happy. For me, being second to someone does not matter. I am happy about having a place of my own.”

The actor was at the centre of a controversy some years ago over an MMS featuring Sasha Agha, his then girlfriend. Apparently, an MMS of Sasha was leaked in which she was seen with another man. Sasha, daughter of singer-actress Salma Agha, accused Ruslaan of leaking the MMS to the media. The row took its toll on their relationship and the two parted ways.

When asked about that episode, Ruslaan said, “I have no memory of that. Life is long and heart breaks are such that you have to get over them. You have one life, so you must ignore the bad things. But one must not forget the good things either. I am an optimist. That is my approach towards life.”
