Kehta Hai Dil... Jee Le Zara

What is it about: Saanchi, aged 34, is a successful business woman taking care of her younger brother and sister, an ajji and a naani. The three siblings were orphaned when Saanchi was young and since then her grandmothers have stayed with her. However, between her work and family responsibilities, Saanchi has missed the marriage bus, a huge cause of worry for her grandmoms, who are desperately searching a groom for her. Enter Dhruv, a 27-year old lawyer and sparks fly between the two. The stage is set for a older woman-younger man love story.
What’s good about it: While a girl past her marriageable age is still considered a grave issue in India, the serial thankfully doesn’t take it so seriously. There is a freshness to it in terms of settings, scenes and the cast.
Even the colours used are bright and lively. The sets — be it the bungalow where Saanchi’s family resides, her office and the factory — all supposed to be in Panchgani, look authentic.
The attractive Sangeeta Ghosh who makes a comeback to TV after six years and the good-looking Ruslaan Mumtaz, who makes his TV debut, are eye-candy. Veteran actress Sulabha Deshpande as ajji is a natural and makes her character very homely. She is complemented well by Meenakshi Sethi who plays naani. In fact, there’s a good chemistry between the two! The story moves at a brisk pace keeping you engaged.
What’s not: Saanchi, who is shown to be sensible and independent goes overboard in catering to her family’s — especially her younger college-going sister’s whims and fancies. Instead, shouldn’t she be making her sister independent and teach her to share responsibility? Delnaaz’s character Dilshad, also a 30 plus unmarried woman desperately trying to get hooked especially to a younger guy jars in the realistic soap. It’s completely OTT. Also, the serial has a Bade Acche Laggte Hai hangover where Priya (Sakshi Tanwar) was a mature, independent woman who did not consider marriage to be the be-all and end-all of life, at least when the serial started!
Performances: Sangeeta is overall good but at times look like she’s trying too hard to be real. Ruslaan as the mischievous Dhruv is a delight to watch.
Way ahead: The serial is refreshing but it remains to be seen how it unfolds – if Saanchi will continue to be a no-nonsense woman or get into the saas-bahu mode like her predecessors.
