When Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar aka MP3 released in 2007, Ruslaan Mumtaz became an instant hit, especially among college goers. Ironically, his critically acclaimed Teree Sang, directed by Satish Kaushik, did not do well at the box office. Mumtaz was last seen in Karisma Kapoor’s comeback venture, Dangerous Ishhq. For those who haven’t made the connection, he is the son of yesteryear veteran actress, Anjana Mumtaz. Back in 2011, he was accused of leaking a video of his girl friend kissing another man. Once again in the spotlight and playing a college boy caught in an MMS scandal, courtesy I Don’t Luv U, the 29-year-old from Mumbai says he wants to do rom-coms for the next few years.
He finds inspiration in movies like Barfi, Maine Pyar Kiya and Jerry Maguire. Read on:
I play the role of a 19-year-old college guy who does not value love. He is someone who looks at women as a sex object. This is a coming-of age movie about youngsters falling in love. The movie also shows how the youth are influenced by Facebook, Twitter and MMS.
The entire period when I was stuck in the MMS scandal seems to be a blur now. I ignored that period. I was disconnected for a while and now I am back. However, I look at things differently and I realised that people who get stuck in such things are just victims. It is very sad.
Such videos are blown out of proportion and everything has a business angle. Nobody will want to promote themselves by leaking a video of themselves in compromising situations. You could rather go on a reality show and abuse contestants or just colour your hair red and people will still talk about you.
I somehow do only small budget movies. People do not mind paying money to watch Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan on the big screen, however crappy the movie is. But small budget movies are not like that. People tend to think, ‘why should we spend so much money to watch this in the theatre, we might as well wait for the DVD or watch it online.’ My kind of movies need better marketing and a lot of support from producers.
I do not want to get into a relationship. I might as well go on dates than get into a relationship. I could do what I want at any point of time.
I am working on a movie called Romeo Idiot Jattani Juliet, which is a love story. I play the role of a don in a village in Haryana.
The movie is scheduled to release on May 17.
